Hire a Fractional CTO in India
Hire a fractional CTO in India — part-time engineering leadership for founders: technical strategy, architecture, hiring, and delivery. Ex-startup CTO, remote.
Want to hire a fractional CTO in India without committing to a full-time executive salary? I’m Kuldeep Pisda — a former startup CTO based in Bengaluru who now works with founders part-time as their senior technical partner. For 6+ years I’ve owned architecture, hiring, and delivery for production systems, and I bring that judgement to teams that need a strong technical head at the table but aren’t ready to hire one in-house. Remote, on IST, comfortable overlapping with US and EU hours.
What a fractional CTO does for you
A fractional CTO is the senior technical decision-maker a non-technical founder can lean on — the person who translates the business plan into a system that can actually be built, hired for, and scaled. Concretely, that means:
- Technical strategy and architecture — choosing the stack, the boundaries, and the build-vs-buy calls, and writing them down so the team and your investors can see the reasoning.
- Hiring and engineering standards — writing the job specs, running the technical interviews, and setting the bar for what “done” means before your first engineers lock in bad habits.
- Delivery culture — code review, CI/CD, testing discipline, and release process, so shipping stays fast and safe as the team grows.
- Technical due diligence — evaluating a codebase, a vendor, or a potential acquisition, and telling you plainly where the risk sits.
- Scaling decisions — knowing when to optimise, when to re-architect, and when to leave it alone, backed by query plans and profiles rather than hunches.
- A steady hand — the senior voice in the room when something breaks at 2am or a big technical bet is on the line.
I stay hands-on. I still write and review code, so my advice is grounded in what your team is actually shipping — not slides.
The experience you’re hiring
I’ve held the CTO seat: I led a ~6-person engineering team, set the standards they worked to, and owned the roadmap end to end. On the delivery side, I scaled a platform past 30,000 users on a lean budget and rebuilt a headless-CMS product onto Django without a risky big-bang rewrite — the kind of migration that sinks companies when it’s done wrong. I took two products through SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 and did the founding-SRE work to stand up the infrastructure underneath. The case studies walk through the real decisions and trade-offs.
My hands-on stack is deep where it counts: Django/DRF and FastAPI, PostgreSQL (including pgvector), Celery/RabbitMQ, Keycloak, AWS, and Terraform. On the AI side I’ve shipped multi-LLM systems (Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini, Perplexity), RAG and semantic search, and voice/SMS agents in production. I maintain django-rls, an open-source PostgreSQL row-level-security library, and I speak at DjangoCon US, DjangoCon Europe, and EuroPython — so the standards I set come from the wider community, not just one company’s habits.
How engagements work
Fractional means exactly that — a fixed slice of my week, on retainer, dedicated to your company. Most founders start somewhere between one and two days a week (roughly 8–16 hours), scaling up around a fundraise, an audit, or a hard scaling push, and down once the team is steady. You get a written plan, a standing cadence, and a senior partner who holds the context week to week rather than a stranger you re-brief every call. Remote-first, async-friendly, and used to working across time zones.
FAQ
What is a fractional CTO? A senior engineering leader who works part-time across one or more companies instead of joining full-time. You get CTO-level strategy, hiring, and technical judgement for a fraction of the cost and commitment of a full-time hire.
How much does a fractional CTO cost? Far less than a full-time CTO with equity. It’s a monthly retainer scoped to the hours you need — predictable, and easy to scale up or down as the work changes. Tell me the shape of the problem and I’ll quote it.
How many hours a week do I get? Typically one to two days a week to start. Some founders need a heavier touch during a fundraise or a SOC 2 audit; others settle into a lighter standing cadence once the foundations are in place.
When does a startup need a fractional CTO? When the technical decisions have outgrown the founder — first engineering hires, a re-architecture, a security/compliance push, investor due diligence, or an outsourced build you can’t independently evaluate. If a wrong call now would be expensive to unwind later, that’s the moment.
Do you work with international clients? Yes — I work remotely with founders in the US, EU, and India from Bengaluru (IST), and structure my hours to overlap with your team when it matters.
